Do You Need a Hire Car at Lake Garda?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 4 min read
For most visitors staying in Desenzano, Peschiera or one well-connected lakeside town, the answer is no: you do not need a car for a short Lake Garda break. The two southern railway stations are Desenzano and Peschiera, boats connect many lakeside stops, and walking is often easier once you arrive. Choose a car if your accommodation is above the shore, you want several villages in one day, or your holiday continues into the countryside. Do not hire one merely to leave it in a paid car park.

When public transport is the better tool
The railway is excellent for reaching the south of the lake: the official tourism site identifies Desenzano and Peschiera as the two southern-shore stations. From there, buses and scheduled boats take over. This works best when you stay in one town and make one deliberate outing each day. It also removes the least enjoyable part of Sirmione: its historic centre is a restricted-traffic zone, so ordinary visitors park outside and continue on foot.
The weakness is not the absence of transport but the shape of the lake. A route that looks short across the water may require a change, and evening services can be thinner than daytime connections. Check the operators’ timetable for your travel date rather than building a dinner reservation around a remembered summer schedule.
When a car earns its keep
A car becomes useful for an agriturismo, a vineyard above Bardolino, early hiking starts or a holiday split between opposite shores. It also suits a family carrying a pushchair and beach gear, provided the accommodation includes practical parking. The benefit is flexibility between towns; it is not door-to-door access to every old centre.
For a couple based beside a station, a car may add keys, tolls and parking without adding much freedom. For a family in a hillside apartment, the same car can turn every grocery run into an easy errand. Ask the accommodation for the exact parking arrangement before booking the vehicle.
The airport question
Do not let the airport decide automatically. A transfer or train can be simpler when the whole stay is in Peschiera or Desenzano. Hiring at the airport makes more sense when you land late, stay away from a transport hub or plan to continue beyond Lake Garda. Compare the pickup location as carefully as the headline price: an airport desk and a town desk solve different journeys.
My recommendation
For a stay of a few days in a southern town, arrive without a car and use boats, buses and trains. For a week in a rural base or an itinerary with several shores, hire one – but book accommodation with confirmed parking first. If that is your trip, compare the rental conditions as well as the price.
