Sirmione From the Water: Speedboat, Boat Cruise or Vintage Boat?

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Aerial view of Sirmione's moated Scaliger Castle beside turquoise lake water, with a small white boat below

Sirmione is a narrow peninsula that pushes several kilometres into the south of the lake, and the postcard view of it, the castle at the neck and the ruins of the Grotte di Catullo at the tip, is a view from the water. On foot you walk through a crowded old town to reach the same sights. By boat you get the whole outline in one go.

The catch is that “a boat trip to Sirmione” means very different things. Some never land. Some give you two hours in town. One lets you steer yourself.

The first decision: do you want to land?

Almost every choice follows from this.

  • Water only, no landing: you see the castle, the peninsula and the Grotte from the lake and nothing more.
  • Boat plus time ashore: you cross, walk the town and the castle, and cross back.

Ashore, the castle and the Grotte di Catullo each have their own ticket (a combined ticket also covers the Roman villa at Desenzano), and both are closed on Mondays. Check the current days and prices before planning a visit around them.

The six options

Two things in the table are easy to miss. The prices are per person for the first four rows and per boat for the last two, so a family of four pays €127.50 for the Fiat 500 against €80 for four places on the one-hour speedboat. And the four-hour cruise has two starting-point options chosen at booking; reviewers mention boarding in Bardolino and Garda on the eastern shore, so check which one suits where you are staying.

Which to book

If you just want the view: the one-hour speedboat from Peschiera. The operator says it sails around the Sirmione peninsula with views of the Scaliger Castle, the Grotte di Catullo and Jamaica Beach, without stops. At €20 and 4.7 stars it is the best value of the group for this one question.

If you want to see the south of the lake in general: the two-hour version. It runs up the eastern shore past Lazise, Bardolino and Garda to Punta San Vigilio and Isola del Garda, then back via Sirmione. Sirmione is the end of the trip here, not the point of it. The listing sets age limits for children and babies and lists further exclusions (pregnancy, back problems, reduced mobility, wheelchair users), so read it before booking with a family.

If you want to walk Sirmione as well: the four-hour cruise. The operator describes it as a guided boat tour passing the Boiola spring, Punta San Vigilio and Villa Canossa, with two hours to explore the peninsula. It is the only option here that is really a day out, and it is the one to take if you plan to climb the castle. The listing excludes pregnant women and wheelchair users.

If it is a treat or a proposal: the vintage boat. €260.10 for the boat and a skipper is expensive for what is one hour on the water. People pay it for the boat itself and for sunset, which the operator says it also offers. For an ordinary sightseeing run it is not a good use of money.

If someone in the party likes to drive: the Fiat 500. It is among the best-reviewed of the lot (216 reviews, 4.8 stars) and the most fun on paper, but you spend the hour steering and watching the water, not taking in the castle. It works as an activity more than as a way to see Sirmione.

Boat or public ferry?

A public ferry also links Peschiera and Sirmione, and the operator’s timetable gives the crossing time and fare. If all you want is to get to Sirmione cheaply and walk the town, the ferry does that. A sightseeing boat is the choice when you want the view of the whole peninsula, which the ferry does not give you in the same way.

A note for anyone planning Sirmione by car

Sirmione’s old town is largely closed to ordinary traffic, so with a car the practical answer is to park outside and walk in. That is one more reason the boat from Peschiera is simpler than it looks.

More choices are on the pages for Lake Garda boat tours and private boats at Lake Garda. If you are also thinking about wine, the wine tour guide covers the Lugana vineyards near Sirmione.

Prices and conditions are the operators’ own and can change; each booking page shows what applies on your date.
