Verona From Lake Garda: Guided Day Trip or Train on Your Own?

Verona is the easiest big city to reach from Lake Garda, and the one most people do wrong in one of two ways: they book a ten-hour excursion for a place they could cover in half the time, or they turn up with no plan and queue for the wrong things.

The choice is between the full-day guided tour of Verona (€65, 604 reviews, 4.5 stars) and doing it yourself.

What the guided tour is

From the operator’s itinerary:

  • Pick-up at one of ten starting points around the lake; the listing names Limone, Lazise and Riva del Garda.
  • About 1.5 hours by coach each way.
  • A visit and free time of two hours, a guided walk of about an hour and a half, and then another stretch of free time of about an hour and a half.
  • An official guide, with one guide for every 20 people, in English or German, and audio included.
  • The route covers the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza dei Signori, Juliet’s House, Castelvecchio and the Scaliger tombs, the Ponte Pietra over the Adige, and Via Mazzini.

So roughly five hours in the city, about an hour and a half of them guided. The cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead. The listing says the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.

One reviewer described the walk as just over an hour with plenty of free time, and said it could have been a little longer with the guide. If you want depth rather than orientation, this is the limit of the format.

What doing it yourself looks like

Verona does not need a coach. The train from Peschiera del Garda to Verona Porta Nuova takes about half an hour according to published timetables, and the old centre is a walk from the station.

You then pay for things as you go. Useful numbers from the booking site:

A day with the city card and a two-hour walk comes to about €66, about the same as the coach tour, without the three hours of driving. That is the real comparison.

In summer the Arena also stages an opera season, which changes access and opening times on those days. Check before you plan around it.

Which to choose

Take the guided tour if you are staying in the north of the lake. From Limone, Malcesine or Riva del Garda, the train is not a realistic start: you first have to reach Peschiera or Desenzano. The tour picks you up near where you sleep and brings you back. If you do not want to think about timetables, that is what you are paying for.

Go by train if you are in the south, within reach of the station at Peschiera or Desenzano. It is cheaper, shorter, and lets you spend more of the day in the city. The 2-hour walking tour or a food and wine tour (the guided food tour with wine tasting is €68 for two hours, 257 reviews, 4.4 stars) gives you a guide without the coach.

Add the opera option if you like music. A 60-minute opera concert in a palace with Prosecco is on the booking site for €65 (255 reviews, 4.8 stars), and it only works if you are not tied to a coach home.

When to skip Verona

Verona is compact and rewards a few hours; it is the lighter of the two big day trips. Venice needs a longer day and a different kind of planning; see the Venice day trip.

If you travel with someone who uses a wheelchair, the guided coach tour is not suitable per its listing. The train and a city card are the practical way.
